Steroid Injections
Cortisone (Steroid) injections now available for prolonged painful and inflammatory foot and ankle conditions such as:
- Joint Pain and Arthritis
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Morton’s Neuroma
- Capsulitis
Injections can be a good choice, when conventional treatments (rest, ice-packs, orthotics) are having insufficient effect and long term use of pain medication is a concern. They are an important first stage treatment for many painful conditions before surgery is considered.
- for example, 80% of patients with a Morton’s Neuroma are significantly improved with conservative treatment, including steroid injections.
They work by delivering medicine into or near the painful area or joint. They penetrate the tissues easily and are a non-toxic and hypoallergenic substance.
Injecting at the site of pain means results are more effective. Cortisone, like all steroids, is a very powerful agent for reducing inflammation and by reducing inflammation we can reduce pain, redness, and swelling.
Steroid injections are also long-acting, which means relief from symptoms may take several days to work but may last for a period of weeks to several months, depending on the individual and the condition. The local anaesthetic mixed with the cortisone also helps to provide some pain relief for the first few hours.
